Disney has been expanding to establish itself as a media company that goes beyond Mickey Mouse and Cinderella. Back in 1996, it purchased ABC and assumed its 80% stake in ESPN. In 2010, ESPN acquired PVI Virtual Media Services' intellectual property, so the patents were re-assigned to Disney in 2011. In March 2019, Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, although antitrust laws required it to divest certain assets, including Fox Sports Networks, Fox College Sports, and Fox Sports Latin America. Most of its patent documents in the Sports Analytics sector are related to data applications, which aligns with its core business model of mass media and entertainment production.
