Following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox in March 2019, Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired the equity interests in 21 Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) and Fox College Sports, which were required by the US Department of Justice to be divested. The networks were purchased at a valuation of $10.6 billion and represents the largest collection of RSNs in the marketplace today, with an extensive footprint that includes exclusive local rights to 42 professional teams distributed across MLB, NBA, and NHL. Sinclair has a pending patent application directed to ingesting, packaging, routing, modifying, and publishing content. It will be interesting to see how the company will leverage its new acquisitions and IP to expand its broadcasting business into the sports industry.
