Intel just recently had its fifth patent application in the energy financial settlements sector published. With one patent published in 2018 and three other applications published between 2019 and 2020, Intel seems to be making a push to enter the sector, especially the platform side where it already holds a patent.
Focusing on the platform side of the sector may be a bad bet for Intel though. Other tech giants like Samsung, Sony, and IBM already have a veritable chokehold on building out hardware and software platforms for the sector, and are currently far to big and successful too be easily bought out or skirted around. As shown by the radian, almost all of Intel's applications are notably similar to patents or patent applications already held by the three above listed companies. Intel's best shot at gaining a foothold in the sector is on the financial exchange side of things, where its direct competitors do not hold as many patents or patent applications.
A blessing or a curse, the financial settlements space is dominated by another company, Causam Enterprises, who holds the lion's share of the space's real estate, in addition to having a decent presence within the platform space.
A small Raleigh, NC-based company founded in 2015 that keeps churning out patents, Causam could be an attractive option for Intel to buy out if it wishes to become competitive in the energy finance space. Barring buying them out, Causam's focused patent portfolio within financial exchange leaves Intel some white space to build up their own portfolio and establish themselves as another sector leader.
