Where other companies are tackling the challenges of supplying consumers with energy and charging them for its use through grid monitoring to optimize when and how much major power producers should output electricity, Sony is using grid monitoring for a different approach. Focusing on micro grids, Sony is developing an open energy system that allows for peer-to-peer energy exchange based on need for energy for both homes and electric vehicles, in addition to developing systems to optimize power companies buying back energy from homes with renewable energy generators like wind turbines or solar panels. Sony had a great deal of patent activity in the early 2010s that dropped off around 2016. As recently as late 2019 though Sony has restarted its activity in the sector, signaling that Sony thinks there is some new opportunity or innovation to be had in the space.
