What is Cloudflare's Role at the Edge?

Edge Computing Patent Forecast®

May 28, 2020

American web infrastructure and security company Cloudflare, which also provides content delivery network (CDN) services, has been periodically dipping its toes in the realm of edge computing. The company recently had its second patent in the edge computing sector issue, which teaches using a tunnel from an origin server in a distributed edge compute and routing service.

In January, Cloudflare announced that it would be leveraging Vapor IO's micro datacenter footprint to deliver Cloudflare Workers, its serverless computing platform. Vapor IO is still small, but this aids in Cloudflare's ability to support its CDN in over 200 countries.

In February, Cloudflare signed a similar agreement with EdgeMicro to make Cloudflare an anchor tenant in EdgeMicro's existing edge data center facilities in Austin, Raleigh and Tampa as well as in 30+ additional sites in the U.S.
