Can Video Games Help you Focus?

AI Biotech/Diagnostics: Other Innovation Patent Forecast®

March 5, 2020

Akili Interactive, previously written about in June, recently published a full transcript of their STARS-ADHD trial in support of achieving FDA clearance. Akili is developing and validating an AI-based game intended to improve cognitive function, and has products focused on Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Major Depressive Disorder. Akili also recently had their sixth patent application published, all of which focus on their cognitive platform.

The company is betting that video game-like therapy can help kids with ADHD to find it easier to concentrate, according to results of this trial. Supporting previous findings, their game improves objective measures of attention after four weeks based on a baseline. Akili looked at change in TOVA API, a measure of attention and inhibitory control cleared by the FDA.

Because they have not yet received FDA clearance, Akili is also running the STARS-ADHD Adjunctive trial, which is intended to provide evidence of benefit of use of the app over a longer period of time. The study showed improvements in parent-reported Impairment Rating Scale scores for patients already receiving a stimulant medication for ADHD.
