a cloud server configured to provide a service to a client device by way of a network, the cloud server implementing a batch layer of a data-processing architecture; and

an edge computing device, separate from and communicatively coupled to the cloud server, configured to provide a latency-sensitive task associated with the service to the client device by way of the network in response to a request from the client device to offload the latency-sensitive task, the edge computing device: located at an edge of the network such that a latency of data communications between the edge computing device and the client device is lower than a latency of data communications between the cloud server and the client device, and

implementing a speed layer of the data-processing architecture at the edge of the network.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the batch layer and the speed layer are configured to manage and operate on distinct and matching datasets. (2) (0)

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the data-processing architecture comprises a modified lambda architecture in which the speed layer is implemented by the edge computing device at the edge of the network. (0)

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the speed layer at the edge of the network divides a set of tasks such that a first task included in the set of tasks is performed by the speed layer and a second task included in the set of tasks is offloaded to the batch layer. (0)

10. An edge computing device comprising: (4) (3)

a communication interface configured to communicate, by way of a network, with a client device and with a cloud server that provides a service to the client device by way of the network, the cloud server implementing a batch layer of a data-processing architecture;

a physical processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions executable by the physical processor to direct the edge computing device to provide, by way of a speed layer of the data-processing architecture implemented by the edge computing device, a latency-sensitive task associated with the service to the client device from an edge of the network in response to a request from the client device to offload the latency-sensitive task, the edge of the network located, in terms of latency, nearer to the client device than the cloud server is to the client device.

11. The edge computing device of claim 10, wherein the speed layer: (0) (2)

The edge computing device of claim 10, wherein the speed layer at the edge of the network divides a set of tasks between the speed layer and the batch layer, such that a first task included in the set of tasks is performed by the speed layer and a second task included in the set of tasks is offloaded to the batch layer. 13. The edge computing device of claim 10, further comprising a graphics processing unit (GPU), wherein the speed layer is configured to direct the GPU to perform the latency-sensitive task. (0)

14. The edge computing device of claim 10, wherein the service comprises a streaming service. (0)

15. A method comprising: (3) (3)

providing a service from a cloud server to a client device by way of a network, the cloud server implementing a batch layer of a data-processing architecture; and

providing a latency-sensitive task associated with the service from an edge computing device to the client device by way of the network in response to a request from the client device to offload the latency-sensitive task, the edge computing device: separate from and communicatively coupled to the cloud server,

located at an edge of the network such that a latency of data communications between the edge computing device and the client device is lower than a latency of data communications between the cloud server and the client device, and

implementing a speed layer of the data-processing architecture at the edge of the network.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising managing and operating on, by the speed layer, a first dataset that is distinct from and matches a second dataset managed and operated on by the batch layer. (2) (0)
