Sony's new tech

Sports Analytics Patent Forecast®

July 5, 2019

Sony's presence in the Sports Analytics sector is not surprising given the company's large size and focus on electronics. Its relationships with sports leagues stretch from the NBA and NFL to the PGA TOUR and MLB. Its Hawk-Eye Innovations North America group develops technology for live sports tracking, replay, and officiating technology, and its line of SMART systems enables customized tracking and officiating software as well as coaching tools that provide instant analysis with video and statistical data. Furthermore, Sony broadcasts sports in India, Pakistan, and other countries where cricket is popular.

The company has been integral in transitioning the sports industry from SD to HD and to 4K, most notably through the Sony Open and the Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Summer Olympics. More recently in April 2019, Sony introduced a new AI-based video analytics and the new HDC-5500 4K Ultra High-Def (UHD)/HD High Dynamic Range (HDR) live camera system. Sony has also acquired a minority stake in Nevion, a communication equipment manufacturer. This strategic partnership is expected to expand Sony's end-to-end IP solution offerings that allow customers to produce live content connecting multiple locations. This means that the company will be able to better incorporate its sports analytics technology. Its technology will certainly improve sports production and increase Sony's role in the industry.
