In July of 2017, Goldman Sachs became the first of the regulated financial institutions to successfully enter the securities tokenization space. Their patent for a system that enables the use of cryptocurrencies in the settlement of securities provides a roadmap for getting software through the USPTO and shows that new trading systems built for cryptocurrencies can be patent-eligible subject matter. Although their patent does not appear to mark a concerted effort by Goldman Sachs to dominate the securities tokenization space, it is important as an inspiration to others.
