A titan within the energy delivery industry, Liberty Lake, Washington based Itron provides networks, software, meters, and sensors to consumers and utility companies to measure and control the usage of utilities such as electricity, gas, and water. Beginning in 1977 Itron now services over 100 countries. In addition to its services being used in smart grids to reduces power consumption, Itron's products also provide innovative methods for buying and selling energy between consumers and traditional energy providers. While it has a presence in both major energy financial settlement spaces, Itron's patent portfolio focus is largely on energy monitoring and payment platforms like smart meters. It appears that Itron will only grow to be a bigger player within the sector in years to come as in 2017 it acquired two competitors, Silver Spring Networks and Comverge on top of having a steady history in acquiring competitors.
