PUMA Is Preparing for a Leap Forward

Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast®

October 15, 2020

Puma, the athletic apparel and shoe company, is joining the biodegradable packaging sector. Its patent publication is directed towards biodegradable packaging for shoes. It appears that Puma is working on replacing the standard paper material that comes in shoeboxes with a bubble wrap with live bacteria, which allows the biodegradable packaging to degrade or deflate over time in a controlled manner.

This appears to be part of Puma's renewed investment in biodegradable products. Puma had invested in a biodegradable clothing collection in the early 2010s but stopped the research and development around 2013.  Earlier this year, Puma announced that it is partnering with Steamateria, a Swedish design firm, and Living Colour, to launch its 3rd biodegradable clothing collection since 2016. The technology includes the use of bacteria in a dyeing process developed by Living Colour and biodegradable material from Steamateria.
