The physical assets category of securities tokenization has always been the area with the most whitespace and most area left for development, but recently the area has been gaining momentum both from patent development and product commercialization. The most recent development being a deal that will allow Vertalo to launch tokens for fifteen (15) real estate projects in Mexico and Canada starting later this year and continuing through the beginning of next year. After some early struggles in previous years with tokenizing real estate, this deal follows some other success stories from this year like the recent deal with Telos to tokenize real estate in Croatia.
These success stories also correspond to a recent uptick in published applications for real estate tokenization this year so far. However, somewhat surprisingly, there are still only two issued patents in the whole physical assets space of securities tokenization. Also notable is that the recent patent applications have been fairly narrow in scope, leaving a lot of white space available for companies to try to patent. With no clear leader yet in the space and a lot of developments to come in the sector, it is worth watching who decides to throw their hat in the ring as success stories become more common.
