COVID-19 has impacted countless industries and markets, including the biodegradable packaging sector. The packaging industry has changed directions as current demand appears to have diverted from long-lasting reusable biodegradable packaging to single-use plastics that are biodegradable, compostable, and/or environmentally friendly. One important part of plastic packaging is the adhesive that is used to bond the substrates, films, and other components of the packaging. The adhesive needs to be biodegradable, compostable, renewable, and/or environmentally friendly to lower the environmental impact of the packaging. Henkel has a recently published patent application directed towards a packaging adhesive made from renewable raw materials. This development should prove to positively impact the packaging industry because the consumption of single-use plastics will most likely continue to increase as long as the economy is affected by COVID-19.
