Replacing Expandable Polystyrene (EPS)

Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast®

May 7, 2020

Lifoam Industries had a recently published patent application directed towards compostable or biobased foams. The compostable or biobased foams are usable in applications where conventional expandable polystyrene (EPS) are utilized (ex. protective packaging, sound dampening and thermal insulation).

Lifoam is committed to temperature-controlled packaging with its LIFOAM™, PROPAK™ and ENVIROCOOLER™ brands. Lifoam currently offers products such as packaging containers consisting of EPS, polyurethane (PUR), and ePUR™ material. Most of Lifoam's products, (ex. STRYOSHIELD™ and PROPAK™) currently use EPS.  Lifoam does not appear to currently offer a compostable or biobased foam product. However, the recent patent publication indicates that there may be a compostable foam product in development that could be heading to the market in the near future.
