In an interview last week, PayPal's CFO John Rainey stated that while the company has "teams clearly working on blockchain and cryptocurrency," he thinks "it's a little early on right now" for PayPal to incorporate cryptocurrency in its platform. This statement, in fact, reflects the broader trend of major financial service companies cautiously approaching this space. Nonetheless, PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, and other big players are actually among the Top 10 patent holders in the Cryptocurrency sector and have been consistently filing patent applications during the past decade. This indicates that they are aware of the market potential and are willing to invest in IP, but are still wary of the volatility and uncertainty of cryptocurrency.
