Recently, at Huawei's 5G is ON summit, a number of discussions took place concerning the role of 5G and potential applications to the smart grid sector. With the shift from safe power supply to reliable power supply, power grid companies are heavily focusing on smart grid technologies.
Hong Danke, Chief of Communications Division of Power Dispatching and Control Center for China Southern Power Grid (CSG), believes that 5G technologies present a solution to the electrical communications issues faced by power grid companies today. Issues including high bandwidth demand, remote measuring and control capabilities, low latency requirements, and connectivity from power production to consumption may be solved through the application of 5G. The power and smart grid sector has become one of the first industries to explore all aspects of 5G commercialization, and these issues will require continued exploration.
