Los Angeles aims to transition to 100% clean energy by 2045. Sunrun, a residential solar electricity provider in California, states that 75,000 solar residences used as a "virtual power plant" would be enough to replace the energy production of one gas-powered plant while also saving $60 million. Sunrun is certainly not alone in preparing for a future of virtual power plants, as other companies such as SunPower and Geostellar have invested in patents directed to solar energy metering and an online solar energy marketplace.
