An interesting and novel system for tracking cannabis movement was recently disclosed in issued patent 10,530,584. The '584 patent teaches a method for tracking a cannabis plant by encoding a cryptographic hash function into a strain’s genome which is verified with a label bearing a machine-readable code associated with the cryptographic function and the weight of the package.
A server hosting all of this information is accessible and updated in real time by a label reader with biometric sensors to record the identities of the handlers.
With more states legalizing cannabis, there is a need for ensuring that the cannabis being produced remains in the legal market and doesn’t make into the hands of cartel members and dangerous criminals alike.
