A key player in the computer network technologies space, Cisco has brought its expertise into many facets of the smart cities sector. For traffic control in smart cities, Cisco has developed communication networks that allow stationary entities such as broadcast towers or traffic lights and moving entities such as cars to all communicate with one another in real time. The networks can even allow the stationary entities within the network to send instructions to, and control, the moving entities based on traffic data to improve traffic flow on a roadway or road system. While Cisco has secured several patents, they have seemingly not been active in the sector since early 2016.
