Mastercard has joined the securities tokenization sector with its first patent issued on September 8th, 2020. Despite being quiet in the space until now, Mastercard is the first to get a patent issued over Visa who has five applications currently in the sector. While there are no child applications so far for Mastercard, this could be the start of increased activity in the sector.
The patent that Mastercard was issued (U.S. Pat. No. 10769626) teaches a method for electronic entitlement certificates using payment tokenization. In an industry that is still developing, this appears to be another unique take on tokenization and the ways that it can be used. The patent mostly focuses on the transaction component of this technology, but their method could certainly be applied in many different ways.
