A titan in the global derivatives marketplace, CME Group's trading platform is exactly the kind of marketplace that tokenization could revolutionize. It comes as no surprise then that CME Group has invested in developing a system to update its platform where derivatives CME Group commonly trades such as equity indexes would be represented by digital tokens. Trading these tokens would be equal trading the actual derivatives, and each transaction would be recorded using a blockchain. Despite the direct application to CME Group's business, they have only submitted three patent applications from late 2017 to early 2018, making them an incredibly small player in the sector. CME Ventures, an arm of CME Group, has invested in a major player in the space, Digital Assets, signaling a desire to acquire tokenization technology even if CME Group is not the one developing it.
