The body of patents for ESS Technology are mainly electrolyte balance-focused. Its R&D branch is working on non toxic flow batteries - containing salt, water, and iron. It is also partnering with European company InoBat, a spin-out of energy giant IPM Group to help stimulate the market for flow batteries abroad. ESS Technology is backed by billionaires Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Michael Bloomberg through their joint venture, Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV).
