Is Intel in Trouble?

Edge Computing Patent Forecast®

July 9, 2020

Intel is well-positioned in the edge computing sector, with the second most patent documents in the last five years despite not being active in the space until 2017. Cisco is the only company ahead of Intel, and by an increasingly small margin as Intel is fast outpacing Cisco's applications in the sector. However, despite that success and being the unrivaled leader of the CPU industry for years, Intel may be in trouble in edge computing.

There has been discussion before about utilizing ARM processors more at the edge, but with the recent announcement by Apple that they are moving away from Intel's x86 architecture and Microsoft having previously invested in building an ARM version of Windows 10, talks about using ARM processors in other tech fields are getting louder. Unlike the x86 architecture that is almost entirely produced by Intel and AMD, ARM processors are built by many different companies and would be a much more difficult market for Intel to compete in. It is hard to predict what moves Intel will make to stay competitive, but it could spell trouble for them if they don't stay prepared for a potential shift in paradigms in edge computing.
