Today, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Heath Tarbert has declared ether a commodity. Speaking with Yahoo! Finance, Tarbert said, "We've been very clear on Bitcoin: Bitcoin is a commodity. We haven't said anything about ether - until now. . . It is my view as chairman of the CFTC that ether is a commodity."
Going forward, it is entirely possible that the CFTC may allow ether futures to trade on U.S. markets. When Facebook's Libra came up, Tarbert mentioned that major federal regulators are still looking at the planned stablecoin and have not determined its security classification.
