With the current console generation coming to a close in 2020, information on what's next for Sony remains sparse. However, a recent application publication sheds some light on what's in store for their Playstation platform: a decentralized video game transaction platform supporting cryptocurrency purchases.
As it stands, the Playstation platform does not support purchases made with cryptocurrencies, unlike their main competitor Microsoft. This new platform would further increase the reach of cryptocurrencies, as over 100 million Playstation 4 consoles have been sold worldwide.
This platform could function with its own hardware wallet, as Sony announced in late 2018 the development of a cryptocurrency hardware wallet that would compete with Trezor and Ledger Nano S. Since their announcement, no new information has been made available from Sony. It's possible that Sony is timing the release of their hardware wallet when the Playstation platform is updated to support cryptocurrency.
