Swiss watchmaker Tissot filed a patent application in the fall of 2019 teaching a method for monitoring sleep quality based on environmental, behavioral, and physiological sensors. The watch described in the application combines data from these sensors to detect and categorize any sleep disturbances and inform the wearer.
Tissot is owned by Swatch, which has been slow to enter the already-competitive smartwatch field. In March of 2020, Swatch announced that it would finally be launching a Tissot smartwatch with a proprietary operating system that is compatible with iOS, Android, and Huawei phones in the summer of this year. It's an interesting choice for the traditional luxury watchmaker to venture into software design rather than using an existing watch OS from larger, more experienced tech companies such as Google. Details about the watch's functionality are scarce; however, this patent application may hint at some of the features we can expect from coming generations of Tissot smartwatches. This is Tissot's first published application in consumer sleep technology.
