Withings, a tech company best known for its smart watches, is launching an upgraded sleep tracking mat that monitors users' breathing, movement, and heart rate throughout their sleep cycle. The data is used to assess and improve quality of sleep. The new mat can also diagnose sleep apnea, according to hospital studies in Europe.
Withings is a French company that has been active in the health tracking space since 2004; however, it was acquired by Nokia in 2016 and has not published any patents since 2017. In 2018, Nokia sold Withings back to its original founder and the company resumed releasing products under its own brand. Nokia has continued publishing patents in sleep tracking since the transition, but it remains to be seen how Withings will build its IP portfolio now.
