Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shared developments on the Dormio Glove, which monitors muscle tone, heart rate, and conductance of a user's wrist and hand to detect different stages of sleep. The device targets hypnagogia, or the phase between awake and asleep where lucid dreaming often occurs. During this stage, the Dormio plays an audio cue such as the word "tiger" that, according to MIT's recent study, successfully appears in the wearer's dream. The technology has potential for memory augmentation, mood enhancement, and more.
MIT has patents in general sleep monitoring as well as sleep in relation to Major Depressive Disorder and dementia. In 2018, they filed for a sleep-modifying technology that includes auditory stimuli.
