Like other companies in the Consumer Sleep Technology sector, much of Sony's presence in the space is due to the company's wearable technology. Sony was one of the early producers of smartwatches, but its products have largely been unable to contend with the likes of the Apple Watch and Fitbit wearables. Interestingly, the company's patent portfolio has a different shape than other early smartwatch players. Sony began investing early in sleep tracking (even as early as 2007), and much of Sony's portfolio sits within Sensors categories. If Sony is not already licensing this technology, future licensing or enforcement may be on the table. In 2019, Sony released the Sony Wena, a smart band for its non-smart watch, which tracks fitness, sleep, and general health.
