Automatic Detection Of User's Periods Of Sleep And Sleep Stage

Aspects of automatically detecting periods of sleep of a user of a wearable electronic device are discussed herein. For example, in one aspect, an embodiment may obtain a set of features for periods of time from motion data obtained from a set of one or more motion sensors in the wearable electronic device or data derived therefrom. The wearable electronic device may then classify the periods of time into one of a plurality of statuses of the user based on the set of features determined for the periods of time, where the statuses are indicative of relative degree of movement of the user. The wearable electronic device may also derive blocks of time each covering one or more of the periods of time during which the user is in one of a plurality of states, wherein the states include an awake state and an asleep state.

  • Independent Claim 1. (canceled)

  • Independent Claim 2. A wearable electronic device, comprising: a plurality of biometric sensors, one or more of the biometric sensors configured to generate biometric data indicative of a user's sleep stageone or more processors coupled to the one or more of the biometric sensorsand a non-transitory machine readable storage medium coupled to the one or more processors and having stored therein instructions, which when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to: receive the biometric data from the one or more of the biometric sensors, determine a plurality of statistical feature values based on the biometric data received from the one or more of the biometric sensors, determine an activity level for each of a plurality of periods of time based on the determined statistical features, classify each of the periods of time into one of a plurality of sleep stages based on the activity levels for the corresponding periods of time, and store the sleep stages for the classified periods of time for display to the user.

  • Independent Claim 11. A method executed by a wearable electronic device, the method comprising: receiving biometric data from a plurality of biometric sensors, one or more of the biometric sensors configured to generate biometric data indicative of a user's sleep stagedetermining a plurality of statistical feature values based on the biometric data received from the one or more of the biometric sensorsdetermining an activity level for each of a plurality of periods of time based on the determined statistical featuresclassifying each of the periods of time into one of a plurality of sleep stages based on the activity levels for the corresponding periods of timeand storing the sleep stages for the classified periods of time for display to the user.

  • Independent Claim 17. A computer readable storage device that includes instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to: receive biometric data from a plurality of biometric sensors, one or more of the biometric sensors configured to generate biometric data indicative of a user's sleep stagedetermine a plurality of statistical feature values based on the biometric data received from the one or more of the biometric sensorsdetermine an activity level for each of a plurality of periods of time based on the determined statistical featuresclassify each of the periods of time into one of a plurality of sleep stages based on the activity levels for the corresponding periods of timeand store the sleep stages for the classified periods of time for display to the user.
