With the FIRST patent asset directed towards a biodegradable film for cheese ripening, Cryovac, Inc. is claiming a stake in the Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast®.
Currently, Pack-Age® is the leading product for cheese ripening films. Pack-Age® is owned by DSM, a multi-billion dollar company from the Netherlands. As shown in the Patent Forecast® below, DSM only has 1 patent asset in the Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast® directed towards a bags-in-bag packaging system. Although DSM may currently have a strong position in the market, its lack of patent activity could cost DSM its position. DSM is going to need to keep an eye on Cryovac and may need to consider creating a licensing relationship with Cryovac or develop its own biodegradable film for cheese ripening.
Patent data activity precedes market activity. DSM will need to act to avoid being consumers’ second choice for cheese ripening film. For now, Cryovac is positioning itself to dominate the cheese film market. The Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast® will be the first to see any major activity from Cryovac or DSM.
