J&J Green Paper has developed environmentally-friendly pellets that produce water-resistant coatings for paper and paper packaging with the use of toxic oil-based products. The compound is organic, biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable, which means that J&J Green Paper products can be thrown in gardens without detrimental effects on the environment.
J&J Green Paper has licensed its proprietary sustainable paper product formula to CST Green Resources Limited of Hong Kong. The goal is to use the technology in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. This has a huge potential for the environment because ASEAN countries release approximately 1.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide. The licensing deal is expected to replace 50,000 tons of polyethylene (or 26 billion 9-oz coffee cups) during the first year and approximately 300,000 tons by the third year.
It is interesting to note that J&J Green Paper only has one patent application filed and published in the US. Therefore, it is unclear as to what proprietary sustainable paper product formula is being licensed to CST Green Resources Limited. The patent application is public information and is still pending. J&J Green Paper could have at least one more patent application that has not been published, information that it withheld from its patent application or it could be keeping part of its technology as a trade secret.
As J&J Green Paper continues its international expansion, it'll be critical to watch how it protects and expands its intellectual property portfolio. Will it file a PCT application? A continuation or continuation-in-part application? How will its licensing strategy develop? If it has trade secret information, will it maintain the trade secret? A trade secret could provide protection for a longer period than a patent term, however, if the trade secret becomes public information then J&J Green Paper could lose its protection and/or value.
