Smart Workouts to Help Reach Fitness Goals

AI Biotech/Diagnostics: Other Innovation Patent Forecast®

August 20, 2020

Catalyft Labs, Inc., a Massachusetts based biotech startup, had its first patent granted last week. U.S. Pat. No. 10737140 is titled "Multi-functional weight rack and exercise monitoring system for tracking exercise movements." The patent teaches a method that uses cameras and sensors to monitor the movements and activity levels of an individual as they work out in a weight rack. The sensors attach directly to the weight lifting equipment, rather than being worn by the athlete. After capturing the movements of a weightlifter, the system uses AI to make predictions and corrections to the lifter's form to help them meet specific lifting goals. Additionally, the system can track activity levels which can be used to help with weight loss or weight gain for lifters.

Although the system has many benefits for those looking to gain a competitive edge for weight lifting, the patent also teaches that the system can be beneficial for individuals who are doing exercises as part of a prescribed physical therapy. Because the system is designed to be integrated into social media and posted online, the lifting data can be shared with friends, coaches, doctors, physical therapists, and teammates. Although this is Catalyft's first patent, they seem to have picked an area of exercise monitoring with hardly any competition. Many companies such as Apple, Samsung, and Fitbit have been producing wearable fitness trackers for years. However, to date, none of the large fitness companies have patented technology for fitness tracking specifically for weight lifters. Filling in this niche could prove to be the key to Catalyft's success.
