Medtronic, the global medical technology giant, recently announced its acquisition of California-based Klue. Klue is a digital health solutions company developing an operating system for behavior change focused on eating and drinking. Klue's technology recognizes when a person is eating via a wearable device, as well as how much and how fast the person is eating. Klue was issued their first patent in late 2018 and has multiple other applications.
Medtronic expects to incorporate this technology platform into their Personalized Closed Loop (PCL) insulin pump system currently being developed. The PCL system will automate insulin delivery in real time, and the ability to know how much is being eaten ties directly into this.
This is not Medtronic's first acquisition in the space. In late 2018, they acquired Nutrino, a AI-powered nutrition platform that provides predictive glycemic response who they had worked with previously.
