Siemens is well known known for two things - industrial automation and medical diagnostics, particularly imaging. As they have grown to a company with hundreds of thousands of employees, they have been known for doing these two things especially well. In the wake of the artificial intelligence movement, however, that focus may be changing. Since 2018, Siemens has 23 patent documents published in the AI Biotech / Diagnostics sector across a variety of categories. Much of this IP is still related to diagnostics, but the company was recently issued a patent for the measurement of brain state during neurological procedures. While this may not represent a tectonic shift in the vision of the company, it certainly signals a desire to branch out into new applications of their core technologies and continue to innovate, even given their scale.
