Novamont and BioBag have a long history of working together. In fact, a majority of BioBag products are made from Mater-Bi®, Novamont’s premier offering that is protected by over 100 patents. Novamont has acquired BioBag and it appears that the goal of this acquisition is to allow Novamont to expand its circular bioeconomy. However, it seems that this acquisition was more of a formality because BioBag will act independently and is keeping the same leadership team.
Novamont only has 1 US patent for a biodegradable bag and BioBag has zero US patents. In 2019, Novamont started litigation for a member of the US patent’s international family, so Novamont is clearly willing to enforce its patents rights. Novamont intends to expand further in Europe and North America, so it should consider filing patents or acquiring patents such as those mentioned in our previous insights: “Plastic Bags you can eat” and “Compostable Produce Bag”.
