Energy Storage: Flow Batteries Patent Forecast®

December 10, 2020

Having just gone from LLC to corporation as of February this year, Creek Channel has wasted no time in developing its place in the Energy Storage sector. The company filed seven (7) patent applications related to flow batteries in March 2020, the first of which was granted in September. It is clear the company wants to remain underwraps, however, as there is absolutely no information published regarding the company; not even a website listed under its name.

One of the two granted patents for Creek Channel, U.S. Patent No. 10,777,836, is titled “Fe-Cr redox flow battery systems including a balance arrangement and methods of manufacture and operation”. The patent discusses what you would expect, the systems and methods of making and using a specific Fe-Cr redox flow battery. More specifically, however, it focuses on the use of a balance arrangement that includes a balance electrolyte containing vanadium ions.

One of the main players in the company, Liyu Li, co-founded UniEnergy Technologies (UET). UniEnergy Technologies specializes in commercialising megawatt-scale energy storage systems for industrial, commercial, and utility use. Along with co-founding the company, Li acted as CTO and inventor for many of the patents they now hold in the energy storage sector. Li had also previously worked at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a chief scientist, lead principal investigator, and project manager. The laboratory specifically works with redox flow battery energy storage systems and to modernize America’s electric power grid. While there, Li invented the Mixed Acid All Vanadium Redox Flow Battery system, which is now under the commercialization process by UET and two other US companies and was the first commercially viable redox flow battery able to be implemented at grid scale.

With every patent application submitted by Creek Channel relating to Fe-Cr redox flow batteries and an expert in the field of energy storage systems leading its way, it is safe to say Creek Channel has big plans for the make and use of said battery systems.
