Cranial Prosthesis with Ultrasound Compatibility

AI Biotech/Diagnostics: Other Innovation Patent Forecast®

December 10, 2020

Ultrasound is often a preferred imaging method due to its low cost, and lack of dangerous radiation, but it is unable to penetrate bone, and therefore cannot be used to monitor the brain. Gliaview’s newest invention looks to address this issue. You probably have never heard of Gliaview LLC before because the US-based biotech startup is still in its very early stages of development. This week the company had its first major IP milestone: its first patent application publication. The application (US Patent Pub. No. 20200375745) is titled “Ultra-Sound Compatible Artificial Cranial Prosthesis with customized platforms,” and teaches a cranial prosthesis which allows for ultrasound monitoring of the brain.

It is not uncommon for surgeries to require the removal of a small portion of the skull to allow for access to the brain. Often multiple surgeries are required to address more serious issues such as tumor removal, so surgeons place artificial pieces of the skull in place to protect the brain between surgeries, or during the healing process. Gliaview’s new device is a prosthesis that is compatible with ultrasound monitoring, allowing surgeons to regularly record accurate ultrasounds of the brain of their patients without requiring surgery to remove a portion of the skull for access.

While the company is still in the very early stages of growth, it is taking a wise approach and protecting its IP early. As the company continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how it builds its IP portfolio along the way. Make sure to check back to the Magic Number Patent Forecast ® to watch how Gliaview and other similar biotech startups treat their IP as they grow.
