Securities Tokenization: Physical Assets

Securities Tokenization Patent Forecast®

September 24, 2020

The Energy subcategory of the Physical Assets category in the Securities Tokenization sector is one of the most open subcategories in tokenization, with zero patents being issued to date. It is joined by the Real Estate and Metals subcategory, which has seen even fewer applications than energy and also has not had any issued patents to date. The Physical Assets category has seen 58 patent applications in total across categories and only two patents issued in the platform category of the sector. Surprisingly, despite the successful progress of real estate tokenization as discussed in a previous insight, there has not been success so far with patents issued.

Also notably, the biggest contributor of applications in the sector is the non-practicing entity Strong Force Portfolio that has shown up in various areas of technology with a large number of applications. In the Physical Assets category, all twenty (20) of their applications are in the energy category, but Strong Force has yet to be granted any of them despite the openness and lack of competition in that industry. The rest of the Physical Asset category is made up of entities that have at most two patent documents, making it a category without a clear early leader.

The Physical Assets category has been given a lot of focus in the insights for the sector due to the sheer amount of white space that exists in the space and the lack of a serious contender for leading the industry so far. However, despite the lack of patent development it is a growing industry in the market and will continue to be a lucrative field until there is much more development in the space.
