Mitsubishi Chemical, one of the core Mitsubishi companies, is no rookie when it comes to patents. The company currently owns the fourth largest patent document portfolio in the biodegradable packaging space alone, with over 80 documents, and does not seem to be slowing down - two were just published. They have 10 published documents in 2019, including 5 issued patents, and seem to be filing frequently. Their documents in this space cover a range of categories too, across processes, structures, and the materials themselves. This IP strategy has helped maintain this massive company, with over 70,000 employees and revenues over $35 billion (FY 2018).
As a chemicals company, it would not be a surprise to soon see Mitsubishi Chemical forming a joint venture with more packaging specific manufacturers in order to further commercialize their technology and bring it to the masses.
