Novamont and SAES Group, two major Italian companies in the biochemicals and functional materials space, announced a partnership this week. The companies are joining forces to develop materials with lower environmental impact while retaining high performance. This week, the companies announced a range of new, compostable solutions which are UNI EN 13432 standard compliant and can be used in applications such as food packaging. They have higher gas and water vapor permeability than traditional packaging and can still be recycled with organic waste.
Given Novamont's experience with biodegradable bioplastics, the partnership seems unlikely to end with just compostables. Novamont recently opened a plant in Patrica, Lazio to increased production capacity of their product MATER-BI, a biodegradable plastic for which they own significant IP. Importantly, MATER-BI based products can be used in a very similar manner to traditional plastics, increasing their ability to- be universally adopted. Novamont further expects the new plant to diversify production and provide a higher content of other renewable materials.
