Zume delivers pizza to IP

Biodegradable Packaging Patent Forecast®

October 10, 2019

Early in its life, Zume Pizza made waves as a robotic pizza-making startup. After receiving money from SoftBank in June, the company has made efforts to grow. Zume quickly acquired Pivot, a producer of plant-based packaging materials. This is right in line for Zume, who had already decided that traditional pizza boxes didn't cut it and had designed their own. They created the "Pizza Pod," to reduce sogginess in pizza. A patent application for the Pizza Pod was published on October 3rd.

This technology will continue to take on a larger role now, as Zume is continuing to move away from just robot pizza makers and into regular food trucks, seeing food trucks as a means to experiment with new markets before having to put much more money into a brick and mortar shop. This kind of ingenuity suggests that the humble pizza box may not be the last food packaging the company improves upon. Further, Zume is expanding past pizza in general, and even has a goal to replace one billion plastic and Styrofoam food containers by 2020.
