Thinking of Driving High? Don’t. Impairment Tests are Coming Soon.

Z-ARCHIVE-Cannabis Patent Forecast®

October 10, 2019

Hound Labs recently had a patent (10,408,850) issue for detecting cannabinoids in exhaled breath. The device is a handheld breathalyzer that can detect both cannabinoids such as THC and alcohol from the breath and quantify their amounts, allowing law enforcement agents to carry just one breathalyzer device for executing impairment tests. A need exists for the detection of real-time impairment by cannabis rather than recent use such as is done with alcohol. Hound Labs is an Oakland, California-based breathalyzer company co-founded by an ER physician, reserve deputy sheriff, and former VC, Dr. Mike Lynn and patent attorney Mr. Kuni Oh. Hound Labs raised $30 million in funding at the end of August, bringing them to a total of $65 million raised. They have 9 patents and 2 applications filed in the US pertaining to substance detection equipment, but no PCTs appeared to be filed.
