IP Protection for Fall Prevention

AI Biotech/Diagnostics: Other Innovation Patent Forecast®

September 26, 2019

SafelyYou is a UC Berkeley AI Research Lab spin-off dedicated to providing safer memory care. Like many academic organizations, SafelyYou has published academic researching supporting their key technology, which is a fall detection system. A study in six residential care facilities found the company's technology implementation reduced emergency room visits by 80% over six months. Since 2015, the company has raised funding from groups including Foundation Capital, Data Collective, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation.

SafelyYou's first patent application was recently published. The systems begins recording when motion is detected and an artificial intelligence program analyzes the situation in order to produce necessary alerts. Now, this technology is beginning to be installed at forward-thinking, technology friendly facilities such as Brookdale Senior Living in Overland Park, Kansas. It would not be surprising to see technologies such as this be quickly adopted in hospitals as well as adopted by regular home monitoring companies such as Nest.
