A vanadium redox flow battery will be installed at a family-owned apple orchard located in Pakenham, Australia. The Victorian apple farm has added a 20kW/80kWh vanadium redox flow battery system to the 60kW solar array already existing at the orchards, and will add a further 100kW of new PV generation. The addition is designed to maximize solar self-consumption and further reign in costs.
A flow battery, or redox flow battery, is a type of electrochemical cell where chemical energy is provided by two chemical components dissolved in liquids contained within the system and separated by a membrane. Advantages over conventional rechargeables includes separable liquid tanks and near unlimited longevity. Flow batteries applications include: load balancing, storing energy from renewable sources, peak shaving, UPS, power conversion, electric vehicles and stand-alone power systems.
