Cairdac, a French pacemaker startup, has recently published their first two patent applications. The company seeks to revolutionize the pacemaker industry by removing one major problem: replacement surgery when batteries die. Like many other modern pacemakers, Cairdac also uses a leadless design, which reduces some adverse effects. Its novelty, however, is the use of a piezoelectric energy harvester that gathers energy from the low frequency vibration of heart beats. The device will also learn to better characterize the presence of atrial events.
